Art is not born in a vacuum, and our realities are inherently shaped by our childhoods and our home lives. This year’s program, Color in Collaboration, was inspired by the subgenre abstract expressionism - color fields. In this exhibition, students were able to understand how collaborative artwork uses primary and secondary colors through the art of collage, resulting in both, individual artistic creations, as well as large scale collaborative collages.
Collage derives from a french term meaning “to glue” or “to stick”. Much in the same way, our young artists wove their visions together while they explored techniques that enhanced their compositions through the use of texture, color, as well as figurative and abstract imagery. In their individual work, our young artists explored themes of family, friendship, and life-alterting experiences that make up their reality; these collages serve as a snapshot into the collective experience of childhood in our communities of color.
The design for this year’s program is meant to place the art in the most relevant and accessible of places to our artists; their bedrooms. As you gaze through our gallery, you may experience the relationship that our students have with the world around them. You may view the way that they relate to art, the way they relate to their families and communities, and finally how they have come to understand and utilize the creative process to relate to the world beyond their own homes.
